Looking to develop your practical teaching skills? The Certificate in Education and Training (CET) will prepare you for teaching in a wide range of contexts including Further Education colleges, Sixth Forms, Work Based Learning, and Adult and Community Education.

Course Content

The Certificate in Education and Training is a part-time Level 4 course suitable for you if you want a qualification that focuses on practical teaching or if you are currently teaching and want to have your experience and practice accredited. You need to be teaching, or have a teaching placement to undertake this qualification as there is a requirement for a minimum of 30 hours of practice.The course will run from October through to May with weekly sessions held during the day or evening to suit your working patterns (days and times to be confirmed at interview). Class duration will be 3–3½ hours including an additional tutorial session to support your professional development plan.As part of the course you will need to complete a minimum of three teaching observations.

Entry Requirements

Subject specific qualification at Level 3 and English and maths at Level 2.You must also meet some non-academic requirements, including a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, have a subject specialist mentor and have a teaching placement or be in a teaching role that provides at least 30 hours of practice. You will need to attend an interview session and undertake initial assessments in English, maths and ICT.

Progression Opportunities

The Certificate in Education and Training enables you to meet the minimum requirement for those employed as a teacher or trainer in Further Education colleges, Adult Education centres or Work- Based learning. Upon completion of the CET course you can progress onto a bridging course, which will give you the credits required to move on to the Diploma in Education and Training.

This course is ideal for practitioners who wish to develop skills in assessing, preparing materials, and supporting students. It aims to enhance existing knowledge and provides a sound introduction to new practices and theories relating to Further and Higher Education.

Course Content

As part of continuing professional development, this programme will promote the refinement and improvement of teaching, learning and assessment. Diverse topics are addressed on the programme, and an ability to implement innovative teaching and learning methods will be promoted. The two-year programme, accredited by the University of Warwick, offers access to excellent facilities at both the college and the university.

Credit is possible for current teaching qualifications; prior learning may be accredited for part of Year 1. Four teaching observations will be carried out per year, and the constructive and developmental feedback you receive will be instrumental for your professional progress. As a university-accredited course, there is access to learning resources from both institutions, and a Diploma from the University of Warwick will be awarded upon successful completion of the study programme. Each module will be assessed using a variety of methods, including reports, presentations, projects, essays, seminars and case studies. A professional development portfolio is also required, which provides a record of your professional and personal progression throughout the duration of the programme.

Level 3 qualification in taught subject specialism and level 2 in English and maths.

You must also meet some non-academic requirements, including a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, and declaration of criminal convictions.

Successful interview and initial assessment.

You need to be able to prove that you have a minimum of 100 contracted teaching hours over the two years.

Progression Opportunities

With a DET, you can apply for QTLS status, enabling practice within both the secondary and further education sectors. Graduates may choose to continue their studies, or progress on to diverse careers in education.

This award has been designed as an introductory qualification for those who aim to teach, tutor, or train in the Lifelong Learning sector; adult or community learning, work-based learning, or teaching in a Further Education college.

Teaching hours are not needed to achieve this qualification.

You will:

  • understand the role, responsibilities, and boundaries in relation to teaching/training
  • understand the importance of embedding Functional Skills within lessons
  • demonstrate session planning skills and how to create a scheme of work
  • understand how to deliver inclusive sessions
  • understand the use of different assessment methods and the need for record keeping
  • deliver a short micro-teaching session to your peers

This award will help new teachers, tutors, or trainers to develop the skills and understanding required for teaching and training in the Lifelong Learning sector.

The study programme provides a solid foundation for further teaching qualifications which may eventually result in either Associate or Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (A/QTLS) status.

  • It would be desirable for you to possess a Level 2 literacy qualification, as well as a Level 3 qualification in your subject area and/or a significant amount of relevant work experience.

Progression Opportunities

Completion of this qualification may lead to enrolment on to the College’s DET programme (Diploma in Education and Training) if a teaching role has been secured and entry requirements for the DET have been fulfilled.
